Here in America, we associate St. Patrick's Day with green beer, wearing something green or getting pinched, and cute leprechauns, but the history goes much deeper than we realize!

  • March 17th celebrates when St. Patrick died

    • He is a saint of the Catholic Church and spent most of his life converting Ireland pagans to Christianity.
    • He is also believed to have driven all of the reptiles, specifically snakes, out of Ireland.
    • Come to find out though, he isn't even Irish and wasn't born in Ireland! He was born somewhere in Britain.
    • He is believed to have used the Shamrock to teach about the Holy Trinity
  • The original color associated with St. Patrick was blue, not green.

    • Green has been thought to come from the green-ness of Ireland's country-side.
  • St. Patrick was a dry holiday in Ireland until 1970

    • Because of its religious origins, all of the pubs were shut down in Ireland for the day to observe the hoilday and public celebrations did not include alcohol of any kind, including green beer!
    • This law has been overturned when it was declared a national holiday as opposed to a religious holiday.

We hope you have a fun and safe St. Patrick's Day and may your day be touched with the luck of the Irish!
